The 36th Fighter Squadron has a rich history dating back to its establishment during World War II. It was activated on 15 January 1941 at Selfridge Field, Michigan, as the 36th Pursuit Squadron. The squadron was initially equipped with P-40 Warhawk aircraft and later transitioned to P-39 Airacobras. During World War II, the 36th Fighter Squadron participated in combat operations in the Pacific Theater, including campaigns in New Guinea and the Philippines.
