The 17th PRS arrived in the Pacific Theater in May 1943 and commenced operations in June of the same year. The squadron’s first combat mission was flown over the Japanese-held islands of New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. The squadron’s F-5 Lightning reconnaissance aircraft provided valuable intelligence to ground forces, helping them to plan and execute successful operations against the enemy.
